Chelsea Turmoil: Rosenior Axes Fernandez Amid Madrid Links and Defends Palmer Workload

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior is currently navigating a rather tricky period at Stamford Bridge, dealing with both dressing room discipline and complex player fitness issues. In a major statement of intent, Rosenior has unceremoniously dropped record signing Enzo Fernandez from the matchday squad for the next two fixtures. The decision comes directly in response to the Argentine’s recent comments publicly flirting with a move to Real Madrid.

Fernandez, who arrived from Benfica in January 2023 for an eye-watering €121 million, first sparked rumours regarding his future following Chelsea’s Champions League round-of-16 exit at the hands of PSG. He then poured fuel on the fire during the recent international break, openly admitting a desire to live in the Spanish capital. Despite being tied to the London club until 2032, the 25-year-old World Cup winner will now miss tomorrow’s FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale, alongside next Sunday’s crucial clash with Manchester City. Speaking at Friday’s press conference, Rosenior was incredibly firm on the matter. “I spoke with Enzo an hour ago. As a football club, with me being part of that process, we have made the decision that he will not be available,” he stated.

A Cautious Approach for Palmer

While Fernandez finds himself exiled over off-pitch noise, Cole Palmer’s sporadic absences remain a strictly medical issue. The 23-year-old England international has battled a frustrating string of groin, thigh, and toe injuries this season, forcing the backroom staff to meticulously manage his integration back into the first team. Palmer was restricted to just a half-hour cameo during Tuesday’s 1-0 Carabao Cup semi-final loss, which ultimately sealed a disappointing 4-2 aggregate defeat. Strikingly, the playmaker has only managed to complete a full 90 minutes on three occasions since a 1-1 draw against Manchester City on the 4th of January.

Rosenior has understandably taken some flak for his seemingly overly cautious approach to the young star’s workload. He remains steadfast, however, insisting that the club is simply following the data to protect their squad. “What we’re doing, not just with Cole but all of the players, is doing the right tests. We are making sure these players can play at the level they need to be,” Rosenior explained. The manager was quick to praise Palmer’s overall attitude, noting that while the midfielder is desperate to play every single minute, he is maturing well as a human being and understands the broader strategy. Pointing to the notoriously gruelling football calendar, Rosenior highlighted the immense physical toll on lads who recently navigated the Club World Cup without a proper break, especially with further World Cup commitments looming on the horizon.
